Ajilon Consulting Assures the Performance of World's Fastest Supercomputer

COMPAQ RETAINS AJILON CONSULTING LABS FOR TCS SOFTWARE QUALITY ASSURANCE AND TESTING IN 2002

Baltimore, Md. – January 15, 2002 – Ajilon Global Solution Center, Nashua, NH, the software quality assurance and testing arm of IT consulting firm Ajilon LLC, played a key role in the development and performance of the Terascale Computing System (TCS), which was recently rated the world’s fastest supercomputer. During the last four months of 2001, integration and test specialists from Ajilon Global Solution Center collaborated with TCS’s manufacturer, Compaq Computer Corporation, in assembling and configuring the supercomputer. Ajilon Global Solution Center then conducted software and hardware integration testing to validate the architecture and system’s performance and contributed to configuring and routing the network backbone. Ajilon Global Solution Center’s success has been rewarded by Compaq retaining the company to provide development and testing services for enhancements to be made to the TCS in early 2002.

“The TCS project broke new ground for the technology industry as well as for Ajilon Global Solution Center,” said Bob Burley, who leads Ajilon Global Solution Center’s marketing initiatives. “The magnitude and complexity of the software quality testing and assurance of this project required an expanded team approach with constant client collaboration. We completely proved our worth and capabilities so that this massive system could be deployed ahead of schedule and under budget.”

Len Amadeo, high performance technical computing engineering manager with Compaq, explained, “The Ajilon Global Solution Center's team worked closely with our Compaq engineers over long hours–nights, weekends and across geographies–to get the job done right. Ajilon provided the essential systems integration and testing support functions we required to stage and deploy this massive 3,024-processor system.”

He added that Compaq selected Ajilon's Global Solution Center, Nashua, NH, as a subcontractor on the TCS project because of the company’s previous collaboration on other complex software testing and quality assurance initiatives and its understanding of full system level performance.

According to Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) directors, the TCS performed so well during testing that the supercomputer was used to conduct research almost immediately after delivery from Compaq. The TCS’s computing speed will pave the way for new research such as virtualized reality, which uses the supercomputer to recreate an event that has been filmed from all angles so that viewers are able to watch the event from any direction.

About the Terascale Computing System
The Terascale Computing System (TCS), also known as the AlphaServer SC ES45/1, was recently named the world’s fastest computer by IDC, a global technology research firm. Funded by a $45 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) which houses the TCS, the supercomputer performs up to six trillion calculations per second and is used by U.S. scientists and engineers to conduct civilian research. The TCS is distinguished from other supercomputers by its massive parallelism approach to problem solving and its speed, which is expected to promote new forms of research such as virtualized reality. The TCS contains 3,024 processors and within a few years will perform 20 trillion calculations per second, according to NSF plans. The system performed so well during testing that it was used to conduct research almost immediately after delivery from Compaq.
